Breaking Free: My Journey to Safety

Sarah's Story..

It was the early months of the lockdown, a time when the world was consumed by fear and uncertainty. And for me, a mother of three, it was a time of both literal and mentally confinement. I was trapped in an abusive relationship, and lockdown had taken away her chance for respite or escape. The walls of my house felt increasingly suffocating, and the fear i had just seemed to intensify with each passing day.

I had endured years of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her partner, but the lockdown had magnified the severity of the situation. The constant presence of my abuser, coupled with the isolation, made me feel more vulnerable than ever before. The fear for my children's safety only added to the situation.

One evening, as I put the children to bed, I made a silent promise to them and to myself: that I would find a way out, no matter the what. I set about meticulously planning our escape. I knew it wouldn't be easy, especially during a time when movement was restricted and resources were scarce, but I refused to let fear dictate her future any longer.

In the dead of night, when my ex partner would pass out from drinking to much alcohol, I would packed our belongings. I didn't pack much, just one day outfit and one set of pj each. I knew i would have to leave all my material possessions, the childrens toys, there hospital outfit that i brought them home in. my eldest first painting at nursery. but i had to remember that it was nothing in comparison to the value of our freedom, and safety. She tucked her sleeping children into the car and took a moment to steady her trembling hands before embarking on the journey that would change their lives forever.

Driving through deserted streets, Sarah's mind was filled with conflicting emotions. Fear and uncertainty intertwined with a burgeoning sense of hope and determination. She knew that she was taking a risk, but the prospect of freedom for herself and her children was a beacon of light in the midst of the darkness that had shrouded their lives for so long.

After what felt like an eternity, Sarah and her children arrived at a women's shelter. As they were welcomed with open arms, a flood of relief washed over her. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, she felt a glimmer of safety and security. Wrapped in the compassionate embrace of the shelter's staff, she knew that she had made the right decision.

Days turned into weeks, and then months. Sarah and her children slowly began to heal from the wounds that their previous life had inflicted. The shelter provided them with not just physical security, but also emotional support and guidance. Through counseling and therapy, Sarah found the strength to confront her past and envision a future free from the chains of her abuser.

As the world outside slowly began to open up, Sarah took the courageous step of seeking legal assistance to ensure that her abuser would never again have power over her and her children. With the unwavering support of the shelter staff and legal advocates, she navigated the complexities of the legal system with a determination born of her fierce love for her children.

In time, Sarah and her children were able to move into a new home, one that was filled with warmth and love. The scars of their past began to fade, replaced by the promise of a brighter future. As she watched her children smile and play without fear, Sarah knew that she had made the right choice. They had broken free from the chains that had tethered them to a life of fear and despair.

In the quiet moments of solitude, Sarah reflected on their journey. She knew that while the road ahead might still pose challenges, she would always strive to create a life filled with love, safety, and hope for her children. The lockdown had been a time of confinement, but it had also been the catalyst for a new beginning—one free from the shadows of abuse.

As Sarah tucked her children into bed every night, she whispered words of love and reassurance, knowing that their turbulent past had given way to a future filled with endless possibilities. They had been through the darkest of nights, but now, in the embrace of the shelter they called home, they were finally basking in the warmth of a new dawn.
